How to Care for Your Skin After 45 Naturally: Choosing Ingredients Your Skin Recognises

If you're over 45, you've probably noticed that what once worked beautifully for your skin no longer seems to have the same effect. Add in the endless stream of skincare advice online, and it's easy to feel unsure about what your skin actually needs.
As we move through perimenopause and menopause, our skin begins to change. It may lose moisture more quickly, feel less resilient, or become more reactive than it once was.
It's easy to assume the answer is stronger treatments or more complicated routines.
But what if the answer wasn't adding more to your skincare routine?
What if it was choosing ingredients your skin already understands?
Your Skin Recognises Fewer Things Than You Think
Your skin doesn't know the price of a moisturiser, the latest beauty trend or the promises printed on the front of a jar.
What it does recognise are ingredients that support its natural functions.
Our skin has evolved alongside nature for thousands of years. Plant oils, botanical extracts and nutrient-rich butters contain compounds that work in harmony with the skin, helping to replenish moisture, support the skin barrier and encourage healthy-looking skin over time.
When your skin barrier is supported rather than overwhelmed, it has the opportunity to do what it was designed to do—protect, repair and maintain itself.
Sometimes, less really is more.
Every Ingredient Should Earn Its Place
As a natural skincare formulator, I believe every ingredient should have a purpose.
Not because it's fashionable.
Not because it's trending on social media.
But because it genuinely supports the skin.
When I formulate, I spend countless hours researching every botanical before it ever reaches a bottle or jar. I want to understand where it comes from, how it benefits the skin, whether it complements the other ingredients, and whether it aligns with my values of ethical sourcing and sustainability.
A thoughtful formulation isn't about filling a label with dozens of ingredients.
It's about selecting the right ones and allowing them to work together beautifully.
Choosing Products That Work With Your Skin, Not Against It
After 45, our skin is often asking for nourishment rather than correction.
That doesn't mean we stop caring for it.
It means we start listening to it.
Instead of constantly challenging the skin with harsh ingredients, supporting the skin barrier can help improve comfort, hydration and resilience over time.
Healthy skin isn't built overnight.
It's the result of small, consistent choices repeated day after day.
Nature Has Been Quietly Teaching Us All Along
One of the things I love most about formulating with botanicals is that every ingredient tells a story.
Australian Kakadu Plum is celebrated for its naturally high vitamin C content and antioxidant properties.
Shea Butter has been treasured for generations for helping to soften and nourish dry skin.
Australian Sandalwood is valued not only for its calming aroma but also for the care taken to harvest it through partnerships that support Aboriginal communities.
These aren't simply ingredients.
They're gifts from nature, each bringing something unique to support healthy skin.
When chosen thoughtfully, they work together in a way that feels gentle, balanced and respectful of the skin.
The Goal Isn't Younger Skin
This may surprise you.
My goal has never been to chase younger-looking skin.
My goal is healthy skin.
Skin that feels comfortable.
Skin that looks radiant because it's well cared for.
Skin that remains resilient for years to come.
To me, that's what skin longevity is all about.
It's not about turning back the clock.
It's about supporting your skin so it can continue looking and feeling its best through every stage of life.
A Gentle Reminder
Your skin doesn't need to be in a constant battle.
It doesn't need an overflowing bathroom cabinet or the latest miracle ingredient.
It needs consistency.
It needs nourishment.
It needs ingredients chosen with intention.
Because sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do for our skin is simply work with it, not against it.
If you're navigating changing skin after 45, start by looking beyond the marketing claims and become curious about what's inside the bottle. Understanding your ingredients is one of the simplest ways to make more confident skincare choices—and your skin will thank you for it.
